The playlist in my current feverish state [04 Sep 2009|01:39pm]
Ephraim Lewis - Drowning in Your Eyes
Color Me Badd - Thinking Back
Coldplay - Warning Sign
Elvis Costello - Shipbuilding
Elvis Costello - Alison
U2 - Stay (Faraway, So Close)
U2 - Ultra Violet (Light My Way)
U2 - Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Counting Crows - Round Here
Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out
Rico Blanco - Your Universe
Rico Blanco - Metropolis
Bloc Party - Kreuzberg
Bloc Party - I Still Remember
Bloc Party - Sunday
Muse - Starlight

Playlist still evolving.  Ephraim Lewis never fails to inspire me.

I have to admit: the vocal melody for Stereodeal's song "Afterglow" is inspired by that singer.  I wanted to capture how I felt every time I listened to "Drowning In Your Eyes" and ended up attempting to sing like an RnB singer instead of your usual indie shit.

Fine, I threw a Darren Hayes there somewhere also. :p

You're Bob Dylan? US police want to see some ID [16 Aug 2009|01:58am]
I don't know if I'm going to laugh, or...

By WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press Writer  13 Fri Aug 14, 6:33 pm ET

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

"I don't think she was familiar with his entire body of work," Woolley said.

The incident began at 5 p.m. (2100 GMT) when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.

The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

"What is your name, sir?" the officer asked.

"Bob Dylan," Dylan said.

"OK, what are you doing here?" the officer asked.

"I'm on tour," the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Blowin' in the Wind" said that he didn't have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night's show.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.

The officers thanked him for his cooperation.

"He couldn't have been any nicer to them," Woolley added.

How did it feel? A Dylan publicist did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Friday.

Losing Moms [02 Aug 2009|12:59pm]
I was at the salon earlier getting my hair rebonded when I realized the TV there was tuned in to "The Buzz," and obviously they were covering the Cory Aquino funeral.  The whole time I was watching Kris Aquino cry her guts out on national TV--going how hard it is to watch your mother suffer in the hospital, breaking down as the pain in her body wore her down--I couldn't help but think back to August-September 2006, when my mom was hospitalized for a potentially life-threatening kidney ailment.  We rush her back to the hospital, crying in pain, a day or two after checking out with assurances that she would be fine.  That was a very stressful time in my life.  My previous relationship happened to be on the rocks that time also, so I was actually stressing out over the two most important women in my life that time.

I'm bad with stress.

I may have mastered the art of acting zen during those occasions, but such behavior only makes me affected on a deeper, more profound level.

Those times in the hospital, taking turns with my siblings in watching over our mom, staying overnight or even two nights or three nights in a row at the hospital room took its toll on me, emotionally.  My mom, weakened, would go "I'm sorry Adrian for being such a hassle."  I'd go "No, nanay.  You're not.  You've been suffering even as I was in your womb.  It's only fair I make it easier for you now."

My mom got better.  For some reason her lupus disappeared.  But I know that despite her being an athlete in her youth, and with me reaching more or less 1/2 of my lifespan, that I will have to face a similar situation in the future again.  One that will take a whole lot more of my strength.

Watching Kris Aquino cry like that earlier...I realized I'm still not ready.  I don't know how I will take it if my mom dies tomorrow.

My lola, my mom's mom, was the matriarch of our family.  Lola survived breast cancer, but the cancer resurfaced in her liver.  She went through something similar to what Pres. Aquino went through, spending her last month in the hospital.

Lola died with my mom cradling her head.  She was still partially-lucid, gasping for air, whispering my mom's name.  Two more gasps, then that was it.  Last night I asked my mom how the experience was like then, but her answers always seemed incomplete, and before I know it my mom had already gone off to a tangential subject.

My lola was a strong woman.  My mom continues to be a strong woman, getting a bit more frail and tired every day.  I don't know if I can be as strong as them.

Perfect Morning Upper [02 Apr 2009|09:25am]
Everytime I go to work (or rush my projects) and I feel really, really sleepy, these three things have never failed to give me that extra push I needed:

1. Brewed coffee
2. The internet
3. New Order

I normally would be passing out by now, but these three things=WIN.

Why oh why, for the life of me, didn't I join that Radiohead music video contest last year?

Oh wait. Yeah. I was working on my own music at that time.  Plus I was swamped with projects.

But I swear, the next time something like this comes along, I will never hesitate to join.  Plus it's Radiohead.  Radiohead!!!

Fifteen Albums [20 Feb 2009|08:47am]
Think of 15 albums that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life or the way you looked at it. They sucked you in and took you over for days, weeks, months, years. These are the albums that you can use to identify time, places, people, emotions. These are the albums that no matter what they were thought of musically shaped your world. When you finish, tag 15 others, including me. Make sure you copy and paste this part so they know the drill.

1. Guns n' Roses - "Use Your Illusion 1 and 2"
The album that made we want to play guitar. ESTRANGED!!!

2. Color Me Bad - "Color Me Badd"
Vocal harmonies sexing you up 4 love, mi amor. I still think in CMB mode when I come up with vocal harmonies.

3. Metallica - The Black Album
Sure it was uso at that time, but "Of Wolf and Man" and "Through the Never" still kicks ass.

4. Pantera - "Far Beyond Driven"
Because of this album my guitar has been permanently set to sludge.

5. The Dawn - "Iisang Bangka Tayo"
The album that made me think, "hmm, maybe there's more to rock than metal. Plus I think I look like the guitar player."

6. The Smashing Pumpkins - "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"
The album that made me say, "Fuck you, metal. I'm leaving you."

7. Radiohead - "The Bends"
Same with Mellon Collie.

8. The Youth - "Album na Walang Pamagat"
The local album that made me go "Fuck you, OPM!" I've since regretted that. But man, was that album irreverent and fun. Motherfunker!

9. Coldplay - "A Rush of Blood to the Head"
I was emotionally distraught when this album came out. Friends visited me only to be subjected to my silence and the tunes from this album. Man, was I so emo.

10. Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello - "Painted from Memory"
Same as number 9. Both albums were on rotation then.

11. U2 - "Achtung Baby"
The album that inspired me to define my post-sludge sound.

12. The Purplechickens - "Here's Plan B"
I still maintain it was one of the greatest albums of that year, despite the many times my head spun around during the production of the said album (and the subsequent cabin fever that followed). And the dual-guitar part in the chorus of "The Cupboard Song" still makes my hair stand on end. I still wonder about that guy who texted me from Romblon who said he was feeling suicidal and listening to the album at the same time. I pray he's still alive.

13. Death Cab for Cutie - "Transatlanticism"
Wrist-slashingly heartbreaking.

14. Ash - "Free All Angels"
"Shining Light." "Candy." "Burn Baby Burn." Nuff said. Plus it was the happier side of 2002, which was around the time I was listening to 9 and 10.

15. Bloc Party - "A Weekend in the City"
The album that made me want to be in a band again. And continue playing music.

The Eclipse [26 Jan 2009|03:10am]
So, according to the papers:

Astronomy enthusiasts in the country can watch out for the first of two solar eclipses of 2009 this January, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

According to Pagasa, an annular solar eclipse will take place on Jan. 26, Monday, wherein the moon will cover the Sun, but its umbral or darker shadow will not reach the Earth, and only its penumbral or lighter shadow will.

“In Metro Manila, it can be observed starting 4:55 p.m. (Philippine Standard Time or PST), maximum eclipse at 5:51 p.m. (PST),” Pagasa said in its monthly astronomical diary.

We won't experience totality here.  Maybe a partial one at best.  But maybe we'll still get some "special abilities" out of it. :p

Now how about getting this to celebrate The Day Where We Get Ourselves Some Super Powers (though most probably not):

Visit Geekerie Shirts (http://geekerie.multiply.com)!  Like right now.

I'll be wearing this while I greet the Eclipse later this afternoon :p

Barack Obama Brings Spider-Man And Superman Together … To Build Shelves [22 Jan 2009|05:31pm]
Posting here for sheer comic book fanboyishness.  Read towards the end, which is the funniest part.  Brandon Routh FTW!

Video here

The Hollywood studio system couldn’t make it happen, but President-elect Barack Obama pulled off a bit of movie-worthy magic today. No, he didn’t make the country’s trillions of dollars in debt disappear via high-tech FX overnight before he even moves into the White House; he brought Superman and Spider-Man together in the same room to fight for the good of the nation.

OK, so maybe it was actually actors Tobey Maguire and Brandon Routh. They were on hand at Abram Simon Elementary to perform some community service as part of the president-elect’s call to community action on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. But the momentous meeting was the kind that comic geeks salivate over.

Though Maguire was kept busy screwing panels of the shelves together, a short time later, as Routh pulled books from boxes to stack them in the newly built cubbies, he happened across a — no joke — Spider-Man book, and walked it over to his super-brethren.

“I think this is yours,” he said, handing Maguire the book. The web-slinger laughed, and the actors shook hands and chatted for a few moments before Routh walked back across the room to shelve “I Can Read: Spider-Man 3, Meet the Heroes and the Villains.”

“I think I can probably beat them all up,” Routh said. “Just kidding.” Crisis averted.

Obama said: [20 Jan 2009|06:04pm]

"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

May tinamaan kaya?

Heh heh.
